Welsh Language Charter Data
Welsh Language Charter Data

Heledd and Kyle presented the Welsh Language Charter data in the school assembly following the questionnaire they filled out in October. We have developed targets and ideas to improve the data throughout the year.

The areas to develop are:
- Using the Welsh language on the internet and while texting.
- Listen to more Welsh music.
- Watch more Welsh television shows and DVD’s.

We are hoping to have:
- Welsh song of the week.
- Arrange a Welsh Cd and DVD fair in the school.
- Invite people to the school in the ‘Cymru Cwl’ week.

We kindly ask for you to support us as the Welsh Language Charter council and help your children develop these targets at home.
Thank you

Year 2 pupils had a great time investigating and observing different types of fish at the Sea Zoo, some were familiar and others were very strange and interesting. The lobsters were particularly large and docile, the crabs in the fish tank were behaving mischievously. Watching seahorses in the water was mesmerising, they were very elegant bobbing up and down like hobby horses. The Sea Zoo do a lot of conservation work to help increase sea life in our seashores. The work they do is very rewarding. Despite the rain in the morning, everyone had enjoyed themselves. The pupils were very good all day. Well done, everyone.

Ruth and Kim explained how speaking Welsh helps them to communicate effectively in their work as social workers. Geraint Iwan expressed that he loves talking on the radio every day through the medium of Welsh language and how he has a chance to have fun with the guests in his first language. Malcolm Allen explained how he has been able to continue to live his dream by having close contact to football because he can speak Welsh and commentate on games live on the radio and television. While listening to their talk and having the opportunity to ask questions about their history and their working life, we learned a lot about the guests. It was a very rewarding experience.

Head Lice
Parents are asked to check their child/children’s hair weekly using conditioner and head lice comb.
If head lice are present we ask that you treat your child’s hair. In compliance with school nurses recommendations, the school will not be contacting parents to state that head lice have been found in an individual’s hair. Weekly checking and combing has been proven to be a more effective measure.
Pupils with long hair should tie their hair appropriately.

Attendance
Pupil attendance at Ysgol Bontnewydd is good. Last year attendance for the year was 95.5%. The Welsh Goverment has set a targed of 96.6% for us this year to attain a ‘good’ grade.

As a consequence, members of the School Council are monitoring attendance on a weekly basis. Obviously we do not advocate that pupils attend school if they are unwell (See Sickness letter – beginning of term). Parents are asked to contact school on the first day of their child’s illness. This can be done by phoning (01286 673880) or e mailing Mrs Farrer on AmandaFarrer@gwynedd.gov.uk

We do not encourage parents to arrange family holidays during term time, but realize that some parent’s work means that this is unavoidable. At present parents have the right to remove their child from school for 10 days for the purpose of an annual holiday. Government policy may be subject to change during the year.

Thank You
On behalf of the staff, many thanks for all your Christmas cards and gifts.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

childrenOn Wednesday morning, November 25, P.C. Dylan Pritchard came to visit us at Ysgol Bontnewydd. He had some very important messages for us.
Year 3 and 4 pupils were given a very interesting lesson about smoking. We learnt that cigarettes contain many horrible chemicals and that smoking can make people very ill. He also taught us about the dangers of drinking alcohol. P.C. Pritchard stressed how important it is not to let others persuade us to do bad things.
Years 5 and 6 pupils had very interesting discussions on the subjects Alcohol and Solvents. By the end of the session, they could recognise different alcohol and solvents and understand their effect on the body. Thank you PC Pritchard for helping us develop our understanding.
P.C. Dylan Pritchard visited Year 2 pupils. With the help of Tarian the red dragon, they discussed the importance of being careful with any kind of medicine. PC Dylan Pritchard discussed the importance of not touching a lone or strange bag, but to tell an adult straight away. The pupils participated in a game of ‘Who?’ and ‘Where?’ By the end of the lesson the pupils learned not to touch medicine, yet to always tell an adult.

Isn't it Strange
colomenWe have a new member at Ysgol Bontnewydd - a collared dove. There is nothing unusal about seeing this type of bird around school, they are fairly common. The thing that is unusal is the fact that this bird has decided to nest and lay her eggs in a piece of artwork.

Of all the trees on the school ground, the dove has decided to make her home in a metal and plastic tree.
She has been sitting quiet calmly on her eggs for over a week now, and the pupils are eagerly looking forward to hopefully see some chicks within the next week.

plant

During the weekend, 24th and 25th of January, every pupil from year 1 to 6 observed wild birds in their garden. The main focus of the work was to find out what breed of bird was popular and which breed of bird was not as popular in our area. The survey sheet came back on Monday so that each class could collate the results and analyse the information collected. The result found that Jackdaws are very popular and little birds such as Dunnock, Greenfinch, Song Thrush and Wren are much rarer. Thanks to all who participated in the bird watch survey.

PC Dylan Pritchard
PC Dylan Pritchard

In order to raise awareness of personal safety, PC Dylan Pritchard visited the school. Pupils from Year 1 and 2 learned, with a little help from Tarian the dragon, about the importance of being careful with any kind of medicine. The session focused on medicine, where is it kept and who should give medicine. PC Dylan Pritchard discussed the importance of not touching a lone or strange bag, but to tell an adult straight away. The pupils participated enthusiastically and learned the importance of personal safety.
